Leather Upholstery Cleaning

Leather upholstery furniture is a great addition to your home, as different designs and colors can turn the dullest looking room into one that is warm and inviting. Your upholstery will appear even nicer when it is absolutely clean. With routine cleaning, your upholstery can last longer and retain its sheen for years.
The initial step is to care for your upholstery and leather furniture and keep it clean in the first place. Rules like “no shoes in the house, on the carpet, or the furniture” and “no eating on the couch” help in keeping spills from ruining the quality of your furniture.

When a spill occurs, however, it should be cleaned as quickly as possible. Different stains and spills respond well to different cleaners. If you have stained upholstery that you can’t seem to get clean, no matter how hard you try, the tips below may help you find a solution to your problem.

• Ink can easily be removed by rubbing a small amount of alcohol on the affected area. You need to dip a cotton swab in alcohol to control where it is applied.
• Stains of coffee, blood, soft drinks, chocolate, and other dark stains can be easily treated with a home remedy. A cleaner can be made by taking a paste, lemon juice, and cream in equal proportions and mixing them thoroughly. With the help of a cloth, the mixture should be gently applied to the stain and left for five to ten minutes. Then, it should be wiped off with a damp cloth.
• Cooking oil, hair oil, butter, or grease spots don’t need cleaning. These stains are removed by blotting a dry cloth until it is completely absorbed. Leather has a very good property, which makes such stains disappear most of the time. If not, you can try a simple cleaning method.
• Water stains are another type of stain that occurs if an extremely cold or hot glass of liquid is allowed to rest on the couch. You need to re-wet the area with a help of a damp cloth to remove it and blot the maximum amount of water with a dry cloth.

Despite the type of stains you are cleaning, it is essential to rub upholstery and precisely clean the outer edges of the spot towards its center. Cleaning in the in-out fashion will surely spread the stain.
To give your furniture an overall cleaning, you will need to vacuum it thoroughly. A mild non-oily soap can be worked into a lather on a damp white colored cloth. Then, scrub the soap over the entire area to remove built up dirt and any stains. Rinsing isn’t required as the soap’s moisturizer works on the leather upholstery, keeping it supple.

You need to keep in mind to air dry your furniture and not to expose it to direct sunlight or heat sources, which may lead to the tightening of upholstery fabric and damage it further. If desired, a special leather conditioner can be applied to upholstery once it is fully dried. This will improve and also protect the fabric and appearance of the upholstery.
